Although I support bookstores everywhere and fervently wish they were as ubiquitous as Starbucks with one on every corner (and all profitable, of course), I find myself especially rooting for the independents. Thus, it's with sadness that I greet news of more troubles in the world of mystery bookstores, as is the case with Mystery Loves Company. As of December 31st, they'll be closing the store in Baltimore at 1730 Fleet Street which opened in 1991.
The good news, according to co-owner Kathy Harig, is that their successful Oxford, Maryland, store will continue to be open year-round, and "We will continue to accept special orders, answer mysterious questions, give book advice and give personal service to our loyal customers around the country via phone, fax, and email or through our secure, full service web site."
Also struggling is Creatures and Crooks in Richmond, Virginia, where proprietor Lelia Taylor may have to shutter that store, as well. Several authors are banding together to set up a fundraiser for the store the afternoon of Saturday, January 31st called "Books and Bling: A Benefit." It's being spearheaded by J.B. Stanley, who you can contact for further information via her web site.
(HINT: It's never too early for a gentle reminder that books make inexpensive Christmas gifts...)
