Mark your calendars for some upcoming deadlines for contests and awards:
- The application deadline for the William F. Deeck Malice Grants is November 15th. These grants are offered by the Malice Domestic conference for unpublished authors to offset travel, registration or other expenses related to attendance at a writers' conference or workshop within a year of the date of the award (no later than May 2010). In the case of nonfiction, the grant may be used to offset research expenses. The deadline for early registration for the conference is December 31, which will also entitle you to participate in nominations for the Malice Domestic Awards.
- Submissions for the annual Edgar Awards are due November 30th. All books, short stories, television shows, and films in the mystery, crime, suspense, and intrigue fields are eligible for awards in their respective category if they were published or produced for the first time in the U.S. during 2009 (books with a December publication date may be submitted in galleys).
- The deadline for submissions to the CWA Debut Dagger Award is February 6, 2010. The competition is open to anyone who has not had a novel published, commercially, in any genre. Published non-fiction or short-story writers are eligible to enter.
- The Wolfe Pack announced they'll be sponsoring the fourth annual Black Orchid Novella Award, with a deadline of May 31, 2010. Winners receive $1,000 from Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and publication. The 2009 winner will be announced December 5 at the Black Orchid Banquet. Tickets are still available for the 32nd Annual Black Orchid Weekend, December 4-6, which includes the banquet, discussions, and brunch. There's a small discount if you register by November 15th.
