Clicker.com was officially launched this week, with an aim to index all the movies, TV shows and other video content available online and arrange it by network, genre and show name. It currently includes 5,200 shows on 1,200 networks and 1,200 movies. In addition to having a deal with Boxee, Clicker plans to index Netflix's 14,000 available movies, Amazon's Video-on-Demand service, and all of iTunes.
The Mystery & Suspense category includes the current crop of TV crime dramas, as well as some classics like Dragnet, Twin Peaks and The Commish. It looks to have a long way to go to index ALL of the available series online, but it's a good start, and it would be something of a relief to have links to all your favorites without having to search through the various online video portals.
For those who are into interactivity, there's a Facebook Connect integration, so anyone can create a Clicker account with Facebook or tie their Clicker account to their Facebook profile, and a Wiki allowing fans to contribute information for a given show or episode. It also has a DVR-type feature in its Playlist which allows users to track which episodes of their favorite shows they’ve watched, set season passes for high-priority content and receive alerts when new content is available.
Clicker has competition, but it's trying to set itself apart by combining a search engine, digital video recorder and forum. Clicker also tries to create itself in the image of an old-fashioned TV guide, with episode summaries that include the year the video was made. For anyone concerned about legalities, Clicker, a free service, only indexes professional content that has been legally uploaded.
Thanks for the great article! I noticed you mentioned we're missing a couple of shows, so you can always send us those shows and we'll add them to clicker. You can email [email protected]. Thanks!
