Hi, I'm Joan's daughter, so glad you picked up on this and other wonderful Aiken modern gothics - it was a great period with Edmund Crispin and early Iris Murdoch in similar vein. Joan Aiken's tongue-in-cheek thrillers are brilliantly entertaining, and as you say often very funny, and it would be great to see them back in print! Find out more about them and others at http://www.joanaiken.com/pages/modern_novels.html

Thanks so much for your comments, Liz! I just now noticed your post, as it got lost among several spammer posts that came in around the same time (grrrr). At any rate, I do hope more folks seek out your mother's novels and they come back into print (or e-versions) very soon.

Chester Himes was one of those names I knew of but had never read his stuff and hadn't had anyone else recommend him so I kept putting it off. He's most known for A Rage in Harlem only because it was filmed twice (once as Cotton Comes To Harlem), neither version is bad but neither are great.
