Good review and thanks for the essay quote, although I have to disagree on one of his points. I don’t think good detective fiction is rare today. There is a lot of good writing out there, and more coming out every year.

Yes, his assessment is a bit bleak - but he wrote that in 1939, so it would be interesting to see what his take on the subject would be today.
