I read Ross Macdonald back in the 1970s. I read his mysteries in order and loved the development of plot and character from book to book. Sadly, Alzheimers or dementia put an end to his writing career.

I've also really enjoyed Macdonald's books and was incredibly saddened to hear about the Alzheimers. Apparently, it was an early-onset situation, which cut short both his writing career and his life at the relatively young age of 67 (and he'd been in a nursing home for 3 years prior). I'm grateful we have some 18 novels and several short stories but I'm sure his literary legacy would have been much longer had he not developed that horrible disease. I'm still angry we haven't found a cure.
